Nobody Calls When Payroll Goes Right

Nobody calls you when payroll goes right. When it goes wrong, they don’t call either. They just notice. Usually a few days later, usually at the worst moment, and usually it’s the person who got paid too little.

Payroll mistakes are cheap to catch before the run goes out and expensive after. A bonus that never got entered. A rate with one digit wrong. A check that’s $900 short, and a person who needed that $900 on Friday.

So at APlus, we run payroll with a safety net. Here’s how it works in UKG Ready, step by step. If you run payroll yourself, steal it as a checklist for whatever system you use.

So what does a safety net actually look like?

It’s a checklist built right into the system. Processing payroll walks you through each step, so nothing depends on your memory.

Step one: the pre-check report. Run it any time during the pay period, not just on deadline day. It shows you what changed: new hires, new pay rates, changes to scheduled earnings. You see the surprises early, while they’re still cheap.

Step two: the time review. The system makes you confirm that every timesheet and time-off request is approved before those hours move into payroll. No approval, no hours. Simple as that.

Step three: the alerts. This is my favorite part. You can attach an alert to an employee on a payroll, like “remember to enter the bonus for this one.” It’s a reminder, nothing fancy. But here’s the catch that makes it work: every alert has to be signed off before you can move forward. Nobody can skip past it, and nobody can finalize payroll with a reminder sitting there unread.

Need a reminder that’s about the whole run, not one person? We attach it to someone who’s always on the payroll, like the company admin. Not elegant, but it works every time.

That’s the difference between hoping you remembered and knowing you did.
